It blends intense, massive layers of pure, ripe, honey drenched fruits with bracing acidity give it a laser like focus that is found in few other wines. The perfect amount of acidity keeps the wine, fresh and lively. Liquid silk and velvet drenched in honey textures in the mouth lead to a long, fresh, bright, pineapple, apricot, vanilla, cocoa, orangesicle and spice filled finish. The blending of the parcels and both grape varieties take place about 10 months after the harvest for between 80% and 90% of the harvest.The remainder of the wine is blended in, or not, slightly prior to bottling. It is everything a great sweet wine should be. Half Bottle (375ml) Sauternes Perfectly balanced with the right amount of acidity to give it lift.On the bright, orange, tangerine, apricot, burnt sugar, butter, floral and butterscotch side, the wine is very fresh, bright and not overly sweet. Sip after sip of laser focused, perfectly ripe, tropical fruit, citrus, apricots, vanilla, white peach and nectarine all slathered in honey with incredible levels of freshness made each sniff, swirl and swallow a treat. The wine is sweet, with luscious textures, freshness but not as much lift as you find in the best years.
In the mouth this has shed some of its puppy fat, but still maintains and unctuous richness, honey and glycerine again, the barley sugar of botrytis, but there is an elegance, the so well defined lime acidity, trace of vanilla and toast, and enormously long finish. In 2019, Chateau d’Yquem became 100% organic in all their farming. It lacked concenttration, sweetness and botrytis. This is a low acid vintage for Yquem, so the it lacks a little bit of lift. At 75 years of age, this wine is still going to improve for another 25-50 or even 75 more years!Mahogany in color, the nose showed off its caramel, butterscotch, orange rind, cooked apricot, spice and cocoa dusted orange tinted, tropical fruit character with ease. Still, this is complex, deep, long and intense, yet remarkably light on its feet. The wine is more focused on the caramel and crème brulee, than decadent honeyed fruits.
